Academician Li Jieshou began to talk about why he studied medicine. Looking back on the research on total intravenous nutrition that started in China in the difficult situation of no knowledge, no equipment, and no medicines in the 1970s, Academician Li was deeply impressed. Clinical nutritional support and metabolic research have been continuously developed in modern times. At the conclusion of the 2019 Chinese Medical Association Annual Meeting of Surgery and the 2020 National Annual Meeting of General Surgery, "nutrition support" has been recognized as the three major advances in surgery in the 70 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. one. Academician Li reviewed the evolution of the "gold standard" of nutritional support and pointed out that the current "gold standard" is "total nutritional support, first choice in the intestines, combined use of enteral and parenteral". Regarding why enteral nutrition is preferred, Academician Li conducted a detailed analysis from the two perspectives of "intestinal microecology" and "intestinal barrier function". Starting from learning and applying nutritional support therapy, Academician Li has developed a series of intestinal surgery treatment measures including intestinal fistula, early postoperative inflammatory bowel obstruction, severe acute pancreatitis, accelerated rehabilitation surgery (ERAS) nursing, and small bowel transplantation. Finally, from the experience sharing of clinical nutrition support, Academician Li returned to his own experience in medicine: "persistence, refinement, innovation, and pragmatism".
