The pancreas cancer center of the first affiliated hospital of Nanjing medical university has been adhering to the principle of "internationalization and academicization". After 30 years development, the number of pancreatic surgeries reached a record high of 720 cases, including 354 cases of pancreaticoduodenectomy (49.2% of the pancreatic surgeries), ranking among the world's highest in both quantity and quality.
The number of pancreatic operations is over 700, ranking among the top in the world
720 pancreatic surgeries were performed at the pancreas center in 2016, including 354 pancreaticoduodenectomy, 145 distal pancreatectomy and 22 middle pancreatectomy. Minimally invasive surgery cases, including 22 pancreaticoduodenectomy cases, 12 distal pancreatectomy cases, and 5 middle pancreatectomy cases. Compared with 2015, the number of pancreatic surgeries increased by 29.7% and the number of pancreaticoduodenectomy increased by 27.8%. The total amount of pancreatic surgery and pancreaticoduodenectomy both exceeded that of the most famous pancreas centers in the world, such as the European pancreas center in Heidelberg, Germany, MD Anderson cancer center, Mayo clinic, Johns Hopkins hospital, university hospital of Munich and university hospital of Liverpool.
Focus on academics and attract international cooperation
The pancreas center has several internationally influential features, including biopsy of the duodenal pancreatic head mass, pancreaticojejunostomy(single duct to mucosa), new criteria for arterial invasion in pancreatic cancer, enhanced recovery after surgery, etc. International Study Group on Pancreatic Surgery(ISGPS) invited Prof.Miao, Director of pancreas center of Nanjing medical university, to participate in the compilation of "global consensus on pancreaticoenterostomy", which was published in “surgery”. And also Prof.Miao was invited to be a member of the academic committee of the European Pancreatic Club (EPC) conference.
Pancreatic center development status
Our center has the largest collection of pancreatic biobank in east Asia, Currently, nearly 30,000 biological samples of pancreatic diseases are stored. Moreover, Pancreas center for clinical skills training is accredited by the UK royal college of surgeons, which is the only training base approved by this college in China. In 2017, new comprehensive ward will come into service. With new environment, we will insist on our faith to make vigorous efforts for a stronger Pancreas center.
